Trap-Neuter-Return, or TNR, is the only proven, effective method of controlling overpopulation in stray and feral cats. This typically involves spaying/neutering, vaccinating, and giving the cat an ear notch. Some programs also include microchipping and other add-ons. TNR, is also sometimes referred to at TNVR, which stands for Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return. It's important to mention that TNR is a continuous process, and it takes a minimum of 5 years for the community to really start to see a difference in the number of cats born outside. Because of that, it's vital for members of the community to take a stand and come together, whether through sponsoring a feral cat/donating to a local organization, allowing individuals to trap strays on the property, offering up garage space for TNR work to happen year-round, or even helping transport cats to/from the vet clinic.
Our program consists of us coordinating with the nearest spay/neuter clinic, helping trap as many cats as possible, transporting to the clinic the day of for the procedures, holding the cats overnight for the required 24-48 hours, and then helping return them to the area they came from. We only offer TNR to feral cats and barn cats - no pets allowed.
After much consideration, we are implementing a $40 per cat charge at the start of 2025. This covers our time trapping and transporting, spaying/neutering, vaccinating, microchipping, food costs, and wear/tear of equipment used. Payment is expected at time of service and can be made via Venmo, Paypal, check, or cash.
Why have us do all this? Besides the experience we have trapping hundreds of cats, we're also Rabies vaccinated and have all the necessary tools to make this a quick, efficient, and, most importantly, a safe process. Cat bites are no joke and instead of asking individuals who don't have the proper tools or training to take that risk, we'd rather offer to do the work for you!
Furthermore, we believe that TNR is not a "one and done" process. Instead, we continue to work closely with the caretakers and check-in from time to time to make sure that any new cats that show up are fixed right away. We never want caretakers to feel like they can't reach out for help again. Occasionally, we also receive cat food donations that can be beneficial in supporting caretakers that have bigger colonies.
In the event someone wants to do all this themselves, we do offer trap rental for a $60 deposit, with $20 with non-refundable. $40 will be given back upon return of the trap so long as it remains in good, working condition. The non-refundable fee helps cover normal wear/tear of equipment and will also allow us replace equipment as needed. We love to use the Tomahawk Gravity Live Traps but depending on availability, we have other trap styles as well.
Our "Spay It Forward" program is a wonderful way for anyone to help feral cats in the community. Any donation amount (whether it's $1, $10, $20, $50, etc.) goes directly to TNR.
Donations can be accepted via Cash, Check, Venmo, Paypal, or Zelle
Taking the cats to the clinic to be fixed can take anywhere between 60-90 minutes each trip. Typically this is to Waukesha or Janesville area, but sometimes Madison is needed too. Having someone volunteer every now and then to help drop off or pick up can be a huge help!
It really does take a community! Let your neighbors know that we're here to help. We know just how quickly things can become out of hand and we want to prevent overburdened caretakers.
Remember, cats can have kittens as early as 4 months of age, and have up to 4 litters a year!
Journey Home Animal Control does not help in the placing of barn cats into new environments. While we are occasionally asked about available cats, we have no part in rehoming/adoption processes. We urge anyone looking for barn cats to contact the local shelter for cats available through the "Working Cat" program.
